This is Week 4 in the Course

Week 4: What does quality technology integration look like?

Steps and Description

Links

1. Housekeeping. Let's check in on your first week in labs, assignments due, and overview of the day. I'd like to review the purpose of this course and how we are not focused on learning the technology itself, but on the application of technology.

We will also work together on registering for Ozmozr.

2. Mock Presentation - MovieMaker. Instead of the SmartBoard, I will be presenting MovieMaker and how to use it in the classroom. MovieMaker Presentation Page

3. Exemplary Discussion. Is this teacher using meaningful uses of technology in her classroom?

In a collaborative learning environment, Jean Sutton presents the lesson "Archimedes' Spiral and Other Inventions" to a class of 6th grade math students at Madison Meadows School in Phoenix, Arizona. The students examine the similarities and differences of Archimedes' Spiral with spiral forms that are found in nature. They will be able to list facts about the life and inventions of Archimedes, explain why Archimedes' Spiral is so helpful, and list some of its uses in applications around the world today. Upon completing the lesson, students will be able to locate two web sites containing information on Archimedes and his discoveries.

4. Podcast Introducti0n. We will go over what it means to "podcast" or listen to a podcast and discuss your Podcasting Blog assignment. Assignment details for the Podcasting Blog assignment is on the Assignment Descriptions Page.

"Podcast" is a combination of the words "iPod" and "broadcast" describing audio, enhanced audio (pictures with the audio) and video files available on the web. These files become podcasts when publishers post the content on a website enabled with an RSS feed. An RSS feed allows users to subscribe to the website and receive content from that website automatically, just like a newspaper subscription comes to your house every day. As the publisher posts new content it is automatically downloaded to the user's computer and transfered to an iPod or other portable audio player. Users can then play these files on their computer or iPod (or other MP3 Player) whenever and where ever they like, thus the time-shifting aspect of podcasts.

Podcasting is unique in that it allows anyone to publish their ideas. The ease and inexpensiveness of creation, the abundance of MP3 players and highspeed internet connectivity all enabled podcasting to quickly become popular. For education, podcasting opens many new means of student expression, enabling students to send their projects and prospectives to the entire world. Instead of their content being seen by the 35 students in the room, it is now available to anyone around the world to consume and comment on.

What's happening in lab?

This is our second week in labs, first for some of you. Make sure you attend and are there early every week. This week you will be observing the classroom. You will need to be taking video footage of the session and then reflecting on it later in your blog. This is required homework. Please contact me in advance if you are having any difficulties with lab attendance.
